Investor Relations

I have a friend in funding division. She is tall and slim, a mixture of Chinese Indonesian, an investor relations.Let’s call her VR. Her job was my dream job. But I think it is one of the most wanted job by a Public Relations Officer.

How come it is not being wanted? Working as an Investor Relations of a start-up company in Indonesia, VR needs to meet investors from other countries. She can’t only rely on Indonesian’s investor.

Imagine her wearing beautiful earrings, classy necklace with smart casual outfit, with natural make up, blazer, a little perfume, pencil pants, high heels, elegant yet smart professional make up, meeting investors from other countries, mostly handsome. Isn’t it a dream job?

For an extrovert or those who love to scale up their negotiation skill, yes may be.

But sometimes it’s uneasy too. Sometimes there will be 50-year-old grandpa asking to go for karaoke together, then ask VR to sleep with him. Sometimes the handsome investor will ask VR to have wine together, then push her to sleep with him.

But VR isn’t that kind of cheap woman. She will reject. If the investor do so, then, “Good bye, Mr. Investor.”

That’s how VR find 2 tips now. The first one is called call and call. If the investor asks to meet at night, she will secretly invite her CEO, a man, then 3 of them will negotiate together. Or she will jump to the second tips, that is to meet the investor during afternoon somewhere in a coffee shop. These 2 tips work for years.

She has been doing this for years. She loves her job. She has ever fallen in love with one of the investors too. They were dating, but they are not anymore. It breaks her heart, but she still love her job.

Lawyer

Let’s talk about lawyer’s profession today.

I just finished a conversation with a Lawyer, let’s name him Jack.

I told him that before I got to work in a law firm, what I know about lawyer’s profession is only by what I saw in television and or Korean drama. The image of a man wearing a black cloak in a courthouse, pulling his suitcase or cart filled with hundred pages of civil documents is the only thing I know about lawyer’s world. It’s the only scope of work a lawyer have to do in an eye of an innocent junior high school student like me.

A lawyer is someone who will often say, “Objection, Your Excellency, based on proof XX, the suspect YY and any other lalalayeyeye.” And in my childhood image, a lawyer is a man job only.

Probably you who are reading this writing is also thinking the same way or were also thinking this way?

It it appropriate to blame the television for this stereotype created towards this issue?

Okay, keep calm, dear TV, I won’t blame you. Surprisingly in fact, Jack, this friend of mine, an ex-Senior-Associate in one of Top 10 Law Firm in Indonesia, even just knew deeper about Lawyer’s world after he has graduated from his law faculty and worked in a law firm.

Funny, isn’t it?

So, I just knew that scope of work of a lawyer is wide since I worked at a law firm and or a company. Lawyer isn’t only someone who work to win a case in a court.

To make it short, there are 2 kinds of lawyer, a corporate lawyer and a litigation lawyer. A litigation lawyer’s job description is something similar like what I have explained above. But what I explained is just a very tiny part of it.

In this writing I’m going to share a story of lawyer which you seldom watch in TV, another point of view of lawyer which I get by months of working with some lawyers. So, this is it, a story of Jack, a corporate lawyer.

A corporate lawyer has so many things to do. What are their scope of works?

Reviewing documents, drafting agreements, drafting SOP, learning the legal aspect of a company, analyzing and interpreting regulations, conducting due diligence, acquiring a company, managing right issue, and many more.

We haven’t talked about compliance yet. Sometimes, a corporate lawyer’s scope of work is also including compliance. Wow, there is even more checklist to be fulfilled if we talked about compliance.

Last but not least, I’d like to end this article with another fun fact which you might not have the privilege to know if you don’t work in a law firm or if you don’t work intensively with a lawyer.

Most of Indonesian lawyer dislike using Micosoft Excel in managing data, they will 100 times prefer Microsoft Word.

That’s all. Wasalam.

Data Analyst

Who doesn’t know Excel? A green application to tabulate data, quite popular in any working industries, right?

I used to think being able to manage Excel has already been great. But, it is not really. Talking about Excel, we are only controlling around 1 million rows of data.

Did you know? There is a tool to tabulate number with infinity numbers of rows, one of them is… A friend of mine, MI, is an expert in this tool. He is a data analyst. Excel? I think it is just a piece of cake for him.

Then I wonder, why would a data analyst need a tool with infinity limits of rows? What do they need to cound?  What kind of information do they need to analyze that they need this kind of tool? Why does Excel is not enough for them? There are millions of rows there.

Then his story impressed me. He needs to analyze financial report, comparing company A to other companies in the same industries. He would check on the total amount of loan for example, has 12 zeroes, checking how many active accounts at that bank, 3 million for example, then apply ‘one to one’ and or ‘one to many’s rule, listing it one by one, checking the due date, date of payment, interest rate, rest of payment to be deposited and so on. If he or the other data analyst have to use excel to process the data, that one with only around 1 million rows. He can’t imagine how inefficient it will be because they are going to Copy Paste the date to different tab. Possible but it gonna takes a lot of time.

Now that I usually only use not more than 100 rows of Excel, I am amazed there are people in this world need to use the one with infinity rows.

Waitress

I don’t think I’ve ever been dreaming to work as an waitress in a restaurant. Surprisingly, 3 months spend my time at a red brand hotpot restaurant with a long queue worth a life learning experience.

There are days I would have training, even during weekend, just to memorize a bunch of menu name in Mandarin and how long does the customer need to cook to get the vegetables or meats cooked perfectly.

There are days I would go to work before the mall’s escalator has been turned on, it’s still quite dim, get off of work after the mall has been closed, the escalator has been turned off. It’s a wow working hour. Restaurant is my house, I spent more time here rather than at my home. I don’t have that motto “Work Life Balance” because my motto is “Working is my life”

There are days I try to understand how to give the best service for customers, what aspects do I need to put attention to, so many little details. By the time the customer passing in front of our store, to the time they ask the receptionist team, arrange their table number, accompany them to find their seat and get their food, service before during and after the dine in, it is all have its own SOP about what to say and what to do. I have to remember it all, every tiny items. It is all does matter to our restaurant’s grade because a random guest will be assigned to audit our restaurant.

There is even a study-case material. The managementhave plans for handling the complaints or questions if the customers ask how long they need to wait, want to be prioritized in waiting area, have gastric pains while waiting in the waiting area, find a strand of hair on the plate, the color of the meat changed, the stove is broken, kids are running at our restaurant, accidentally leave their stuff in our outlet after they dine in, and so on. They have all the plannings! Even I also learn how to deal with a couple customer, how if I saw them celebrating birthday, anniversary, about to break up, got drunk, have a company meeting, and so on. It was all common to particular things which are very possible to happen.

We also have our own dance. This is one of the things I love the most. This dance unites us. We would gather in the morning or after a lunch break to do this. This signature dance is shown to public too when our customer is having birthday or have any other special occasions that suits this performance. It was so funny and memorable. We are singing and dancing and laughing happily.

There are training about appearance and behavior too. It is a training which is repeated over and over again. I memorized it all. What to wear, how to wear, how to put my hair in a bun properly, how many times do we need to wash our socks, what kind of lipstick color I need to put on, what kind of long trousers which is allowed to wear, what is allowed to be done during working hour, how to deal if we see something falls to the ground whether to wash it or to throw it, what tools to be used to clean or do something and the consequences and the score, work violation which is absolutely prohibited and many other things. I remember it all.

There is even a theory on how to do plating, how to arrange the tables and dish racks neatly and many others. There is tight and symetrical theory which I find still very useful for my daily life up till now after I have resigned. This theory has been successful to guide me to a nice-looking interios.

Working in service industry, I have to get used to of customer’s complaint although it is being the last thing I expect. I am trained on how to manage it. There were moments I got so exasperated but can do nothing except smiling and apologize.

Most of the days I would get back to my apartment feeling that my bones were so shattered inside, but I was so grateful to have some room mates who share the same experience with me, we would talk and laugh until our jaw so numb. It’s a little pleasure which only be able to be felt if I work here, super precious.

Since I work here, the experience of getting into another restaurant has never been the same again. Before I joint, whenever I want to eat, I just come and eat. But now, I become more critical about a restaurant. Automatically I became an auditor. I willcheck whether they have a hygiene restaurant, welcome the customer in a warm way or not, have knowledge about the restaurant, know how to treat the customer, serve the menu in a good way, how they hold and arrange the plate. I just automatically have the sense and try to filter every thing from A to Z.

Really, it is a very precious experience to be part of this family.

WFH VS WFO

At Jakarta, Indonesia, Covid-19 Outbreak makes our Governor issue regulations, letting employees work from home (WFH) to reduce the spread of the virus. But not all people has the privilege to do WFH. Some still needs to work from office (WFO) every day.

As for me, working in a bank industry, and I’m still in probation period, I have to WFO every day. Well, actually I don’t really have that urgency to come to office every day, but as an in-a-probation-officer, I choose to fulfill 100% requirement of my boss, so that’s what I do, go to office every day.

I know that most of my friends are working from home every day. And I’m kind of envy. While I need to wake up minimum 1 hour earlier than they do in order to be able to reach office on time, they can wake up just some minutes before their working time.

I got envy too, I need to spend more money for transporting from my living place to office. And since Covid-19 happens, my company placed me to an office more far than my first office, so I don’t only need to spare extra money for grabbing a car, but also spend more time to travel as well.

While my other WFH friends can happily work with their family, but here I am working with my workmates. Not that I hate my workmates, but it is nicer to work at home, so cozy and surrounded by the people whom you love.

Another thing, my friends can enjoy lunch at home, while I need to wake up another 1 hour earlier to cook. Well, I can order food online, but there will be another extra cost.

At least those all what make me envy with WFH peeps of mine at the first place.

But after having quite a few conversation with them who do WFH every day, they’re experiencing different struggle than me. And now after I hear it, I don’t know which one is better.

They indeed can wake up a little later every day, sometimes they even work after lunch, which is not more than 8 hours a day. But all of my friends experiencing this truly aware that this new condition is not good and they want to change their laziness. They said they get used to of working on their bed, sometimes sleep during their working hour, doing anything but not working. And it becomes their new normal, Kind of a bad habit for them.

Some are having a long-working-hour, working even after 7 pm, having no boundaries.

Some are being sick, too many cholesterol because staying too long at home and not doing workout.

Well, what I want to say, either you are working for home or working from office, we are facing difficulties and we are adapting to it together. Now I stop complaining, which is good.

Instead of trying to change the thing I can’t change, I try to enjoy the things meant to be, adapt to it and finally learn to love it.

Commuter

Hi, reader! Are you a commuter? If yes, which level are you? One who spends minimum 1 hour on the street? 2 hours? 3 hours or even more?

Well, no matter how many hours or minutes you spend on the road, I hope you enjoy the whole commuting time of yours. Please find below my personal point of view of commuting. If you have any other perspective, please feel free to leave your comment.

I was amazed by commuter’s way of mobilize. How could they spend hours on the road, standing up, waiting to reach their destination? How could they willingly waste their time doing nothing?

I might have lived at Jakarta, a-busy-metropolitan-city for more than 5 years, but up until today I am still learning to enjoy traffic jam and polution. I hesitate I can really love them.

Currently I get not better option than commuting for minimum 1.5 hours from and to my working place. This is something I used to avoid, but currently I have to deal with this.

It took me several days to finally like my new status. Instead of only walking or standing up or sitting in a bus, I choose to study while commuting. You are might be wondering how I do it not, let me tell you.

Podcast is my new best friend.

Thank you Google Podcast. Thank you Spotify. I would lying on my bed and scrolling at them the previous night, exploring which episode of podcast I’d like to have the next day. What kind of food I’m going to feed my brain the next day?

Sometimes, Ted Talk or Korean Class got me a bit overwhelmed, so I choose to listening to a podcast which doesn’t require many focus, such as funny short stories. Sometimes I would prefer music too.

Thank you to my Bluetooth headset too! I don’t need to deal with messy cable. Listening becomes so much fun.

The reason why I can enjoy commuting is, funnily, the activities I plan to do which makes me forget that I’m actually commuting. And some people were doing it too!

As I listening to my podcast, I notice that some people are listening to music, talking to their parents or friends in a phone, liking Instagram pictures, watching Korean drama, and any other actions which could distract their attention, which is great.

If you can do two or three things at once, why not?

Teacher – Educator

There are 2 kinds of teacher in this world. The first one is a teacher only. The second one is a teacher as well as an educator. I love to be the second-type one. A friend of mine is.

He was a teacher in a school of character, let’s call him SN. The first period of the teaching for him was not easy. The school had a high standard. One of them is in the aspect of politeness.

All the teachers would be asked to respect the security guard and cleaning service. Saying god morning with a warm and lovely tone, followed by a welcoming gesture. This has to be a habit for all the teachers. Well for some teachers, this is not easy.

If there is a teacher who wasn’t wiling to do so, the Principal will call this teacher and rebuke him. This has to be a habit embedded in the teachers.

Long story short, someday, a student of SN asked SN, “Sir, why do I have to respect them? They are filthy. I don’t want to. Their cloth and skin is always full of sweat and or any other dirt.

Then SN asked the kid, “Hi kid, do you think they are a human?”

Then the kid nodded.

teacher

“Okay good, are you human too?”

The kid nodded again.

“Okay, smart kid. What do you eat?”

The kid thought for a while before he finally answered, “Rice most of the time, Sir.”

“Okay, then do you think they eat rice too?”

The kid thought for a while too before said yes in the end.

SN told them, “If both of you are human and eating rice, then why there must be a reason for you not to respect that man? He is just earning not as much money as your parents did. But we are all the same, we are human, God’s creation, born and being loved, born to love as well. We both eat the same rice, breath the same air and drink the same water, even praise the same God too. If you can respect me as your teacher who didn’t earn as much money as your parents did, why can’t you respect the cleaning service and or security?”

Freelancer

How do you think life as a freelancer is?

Let me share you a story of life of a Food Blogger, Public Relations Officer, Digital Marketer, Advertisement Campaigner, Social Media Specialist – Freelancer.

His apartment is his office. From table to chair, sofa to floor, television to bed, anything anywhere he could sit at and put on his laptop, it is his working area.

Here it is, story of FS! A creative-young -adult, good in reviewing and designing, working everywhere. Everywhere is his office. And nowhere is his office.

“FS, it is nice to know you. I always wanted to be a freelancer, I think it is cool working for some companies and becoming boss of my own time. How is it living as a freelancer?” asked me to FS.

Man looking at computer code on a laptop while working from his small office.

He smiled. “Yes, it is good. I’ve been working as a freelancer for around 3 years, and sometimes I feel lonely. Sometimes I get a kind of feeling to sit in a office like I used to did. There are moments I’m losing my motivation, and bed just make me wanted to sleep. Hahaha, for me it is the hardest one to be controlled.”

“Wow, so I can say sometimes you missed … kind of office atmosphere?” asked me to him.

“Yes, yes, kind of. You know, sometimes when you are overwhelmed a little bit, you just need to stand up, find people and talk for a while, laugh, eating something, sharing something, do whatever it is to make you relax a little bit. And a good point sitting in front of a laptop in a office is, you are not allowed to sleep. But as if I worked alone, I can sleep anywhere I wanted too. I just need to fulfill the deadline.”

“Oh I see. So the temptation to sleep and managing your own time is kind of … challenging? hahaha” asked me to him laughing.

Workaholic

Can we address someone who works for 66 hours a week as a workaholic?

In my dictionary it’s a yes.

So here it is, story of RK, a 24-year-old, funny yet quirky Management Trainee of a hotpot restaurant.

“How can you choose this job, RK?” asked me to this beautiful lady in a sunny day, drinking hot chocolate.

“Well, It’s quite not a short story, but I can say that I’m kind of trapped, told her to me then blinking her eyes a little bit, then she continued.

“I don’t believe I’m living this kind of life now. Working like a robot and seeing some humans truly working as they are a super powerful robot, only need some hours to be charged then working for the whole day. This is kind of unbelievable. True story, anyway!

Being a Management Trainee for a hotpot restaurant made me live this kind of life.

I am more than grateful.

Wake up at 8.30 am in the morning, have shower, make a super neat hair bun and use hair wax, use handie talkie and get used to if it’s cable, then go to work.

There are even some procedures to go to toilet or to drink because during working time I wear company’s uniform.

workaholic

I thought it is going to be a super boring life. But it turns out, not really. There are gems inside this kind of life.  It is fun!

I learn how to play rubic twist, making a ball shape and a heart shape and a dog shape and snake shape whatever it is you name it.

I learn to dance with noodle, pulling the noodle dough here and there, make a beautiful movement then creates a syhmphony. Kind of new art and new game. Again, new experience.

I get a chance to live with 5 other Chinese women, eating a super Chinese breakfast.  Having goji berry and plum and longan to be cooked with porridge and served as breakfast.  Then having a Mandarin conversation breakfast. It is somehow makes me feel like I’m living in a little China town.

Those are new things I experienced which made my life becomes more colorful. Who says you have to go to a far place to do new things? Any experiments can be done anywhere. Go ahead, try at least 1 each day!  “

Weekend Worker

Is there anyone in this world who want to work during weekend?

I don’t think so, me either.

It’s been pretty difficult and challenging for me to choose my new job as an MT in a restaurant, necessitates me to work during weekend.

I asked several people’s opinions until I finally settled my mind. Considering here and there, I finally chose my new job, with all the consequences, having to work during the weekend and having a day off during weekday. Plus, I need to work for 9 hours and having 2 hours of break. In amount, I will need at least 11 hour in the office.

Here is an opinion of SV, a woman, a director of a high-class hotel.

“I’ve ever worked during weekend for 2 years. Well, it’s not as bad as what people think. Out of 7 days in a week, I only have one day off during the weekday. I love that. I can go to bank in Wednesday. There is no many people in cinemas and or KTV, ticket prices are cheaper. Not as bad as what people think. I got new friends in service industry.”

Different opinions from AL, a man, a phone technician in a mall.

“I used to be full 7 days in a week. Working non stop. I got 2 days off in a month, in weekday. Difficult? Sure, yes. But I was working in a mall, so I always find time to look stores around, washing my eyes a little bit, sometimes relax for some minutes. And unexpectedly met my friends in the mall, talking for a while then continue working. Days during weekend passed so fast! Like I was busy fixing here and there, serve here and there, and suddenly it’s get off time, packing and going back home.”

Well, SL and AL are only a few people’s opinion whom I ask about working during weekend. Some said, “Get ready to lose your social life, my friend.”

This made me broke a little bit. The more I hear people said this, the more broken I became. But the more I asked people like AL and SL, the nicer I felt.

Everyone has different opinions and I can not compare it. I have to feel it by myself and I will see. But one thing I’m sure of is, as long as I love the work, I will be fine. As long as I can find way to enjoy it, I will be fine. Everything is gonna be okay.
