Mother Working as a CEO

“Hi JG, so happy to meet you, so how’s life?”, ask me to JG, a 50-year-old successful CEO having a 10-year-old beautiful daughter.

“Hi too!  Thank you for asking. Life’s been very good, very productive as well.”

Suddenly JG’s phone ringing. JG open her phone and open a photo of a beautiful hand drawing. She smiled proudly and show me the phone.

“Woww… Such a beautiful hand drawing! Is it drawn by your daughter? “

“Yes, it is.”

“This is wonderful, a young kid like her can draw this very detail. She is talented in drawing, I can tell it by seeing this beautiful astronaut. If I’m not mistaken, she is having a holiday, right?”

“Thank you for the compliment! Yes, she is. A long one.”

“Oh really? Until when?”

“Until around August. It’s still a long time to go. I wonder if I can accompany her. Unfortunately, I can’t really do. And our nanny’s just kind of runaway. She can’t be contacted after Lebaran holiday.

So my daughter kind of losing one of her best friends.”

Well, I’m kind of speechless to hear it, I don’t really have any solution. The only thing I can do is to be the best listener. So I sat there, just talking.

“I think we can find something like a class or a program to join, kids camp or something alike.”

“Yes, I’m looking for one. How to say… As her mother, I wish I can accompany her, letting her know I can always be her best friend. But at some point,  I wish she could understand that my responsibility as a CEO of a law firm makes my day full. I’ve tried my best to arrange a time for her, gives her the best school, the healthiest food, the most beautiful cloth, any best thing for her. But maybe all she needs is quality time, I’m trying my best to fulfill it. “

“Hi dear, I can see it, I can feel it. I notice every single act of your love to her. From the way your eyes read her messages, to the way you blow her hair, it tells everything, more than words. Even you set your special phone ringtone to differentiate her messages from your Clients right?”

JG didn’t say anything. But her eyes kind of saying that she is nodding. I believe it’s a yes,  so I continued.

“I noticed that too! You are the best mom, and the best CEO as well!”

Not long after that, JG’s phone ringing again. This time a bit longer, a special ringtone from her little princess. JG picked up her phone and said, “I’ll be there! Let’s grab sushi together.”

I got surprised, we just had a full delicious dinner. I’m still full, and I believe she is full as well.

“So you are having another dinner? Again?” asked me half laughing.

“Hahaha yes, my second round of dinner, with my princess. Sorry, the best CEO mother is leaving. Good night! And thank you!”

Interpreter of a Health Project

“If I’d known it’s an illegal project, I won’t be involved.”

A story of MU,  a 20 year-old-man, an exchange student working as an interpreter in a Y country.

Being an interpreter was MU’s common job. One day MU got a phone call from his uncle from X country, his hometown as well, “Hey brother, please help my friend, an old man, he needs an interpreter in the hospital.”

Because it’s his uncle order, it doesn’t take a long time for MU to say yes. He just agreed to say yes, moreover hearing that this old man is the family of a big company in X country. Being this family’s interpreter was an honor for him, and a good way to expand his networking too.

Long story short, MU pick this old man’s family in the airport. He met this old man and his wife and another local person from Y country who accompany this little family. Y country is the country they are at right at that time. Let’s name this local Y person as NG.

They were heading to a hospital. For intermezzo, this old man’s wife brought so many cash in her big black luggage! All is money.

This old man undergoes treatment for several days in the hospital. MU felt strange because this old man didn’t look sick at all. He is all too well. He can move, walk as usual even eat heartily.

The second strange thing is the hospital receipt. The nurse always gives the receipt to NG. And when MU see the price, the hospital didn’t really write it in detail. Sometimes it’s even too cheap! It looks like they were hiding something and MU not sure what it is.

The third strange thing is, this family isn’t allowed to speak X language anywhere inside the hospital outside their room. Anyway, their small room is located at the very corner of the third floor which is only be filled by them. That room has 3 beds, but it is only be filled by them. It’s quite strange remembering the price is quite cheap.

That’s how it runs for around 1 month. It looks like their existence is being hidden. After having treatment for around 1 month, this old man needs to move to another city, Z city. It took around 8 hours of transportation by car. MU didn’t really understand what’s happening until they arrived at Z. The mystery of the strange things getting more clear there.

MU’s guessing was right. This old man wants to do heart transplantation. And NG is the broker! She is providing illegal healthy organs of people. And this time, NG provides a healthy heart for this old man. That’s why this old man needs to live healthily, to be able to have heart transplantation.

NG got the heart from a drug dealer. For emphasizing,  he is just a dealer, not a user. This dealer has around the same height and weight as this old man. That’s why he is qualified. Moreover, his heart is also healthy.

Don’t ask me how NG got the heart of this dealer. Even MU didn’t know. Both I and MU also wondering how NG got this illegal heart! And also other body organs too?

Long story short, this old man got an operation at Z city. It takes around 2-3 days, a bit longer than usual. His wife and MU got so insecure waiting for the operation result. Surprisingly, it went good. This old man slowly getting better after the operation. The heart transplantation went successful! He just needs more time for recovery.

During his recovery, this old man can’t speak. He has a kind of tool connected to his throat. It makes him unable to speak his words out, so he just communicates by doing lip pronouncing.

It all went as usual until a tense talk happened in their room. This old man speaks to MU and his wife, with no voice, only lip pronouncing, it took around 2-3 times for MU to understand, the message is something like this,  “Please be careful when you are speaking. Someone around us understands X language. She is putting her eyes on us.” MU got really surprised and then translate it with a small volume of voice to this old man’s wife.

His wife’s reaction was unpredictable. She becomes so shocked that she re-speak loudly his husband’s question. “Who? Who is that person?”

Soon after that, this old man’s face looked so pale and angry. Moreover, at that time, NG the dealer, who doesn’t understand X language at all, notice that something super strange is happening, walk closer from the edge of the bed to the head side of this old man, “Panicky and loudly asked, “Why?  Why?  What happens?  Why you all suddenly so strange?”

This situation messed up everything. Chaos.

After that situation, the health of this old man getting worse. Around 3 weeks later, this old man die. If that conversation didn’t happen, maybe that old man won’t die that day. It seems like the hospital wants to protect their reputation. After conducting an illegal operation which is actually successful and cause this old man stay alive, the hospital found out that someone knew about this. In order to keep the hospital’s name clean, the hospital slowly kills this old man with their treatment and or medicine. This is a personal assumption.

Anyway, the story hasn’t ended yet. This one made me surprised as well. After this old man dies, it is left 3 people: MU the interpreter, NG the organ broker, and this old man’s wife.

Three of them were at a lift. Just 3 of them. NG was standing behind MU and this old man wife. Suddenly, this wife smelt an uncomfortable thing, she automatically asked MU, “Do you smell corpse’s smell?”

After that, both MU and the wife of this old man see their behind. They saw NG keep holding his head, like tightly grasping her hair, withholding her head to make it stay there and not detached from her neck, keep praying and withstand the pain. After the lift door opened, she quickly runs outside and loudly praying.

Since that situation, MU never wanted to be an interpreter in the hospital. No more. Thank you, next.

Patient of Cataract

I thought I’m the strongest person in the world, being able to bear the hurt of my knees when it’s outer skin being roughly swiped with a gauze in a operation room to clean the wound. But my speculation is wrong, UL a 25 year-old accountant is the strongest yet bravest girl friend of mine.

“Hey UL, how is your cataract operation? Went good? “

“Hahaha,” she laughed, “Surprisingly unforgettable! “

“Unforgettable? Why? Would you mine to share me how you deal with it?”

“Yeah yeah sure! So they do an operation to change my lens. For your information, my eyes are minus 6. The left one is cataract, so i have to change the lens into the new one.
I thought they will do a total anesthesia, but they just do the partial anesthesia! But anyway since it’s an anesthesia, I thought it wouldn’t be so hurtful. So there I was, lying in the operation room, wearing typical white operation cloth. They closed my right eyes with gauze, or whatever white thing it is. But my left eyes left open, I wasn’t able to wink my left eyes So my lovely left eyes keep opening during the operation.”

“Hmm okay. Then?” asking me to her because UL suddenly didn’t speak at all.

cataract eye

“I thought it won’t be hurt since I get anesthesia. But oh my God, my expectation was totally wrong. I can see and feel the operation very detail. Since my eyes can’t wink and always be opened, I can see and I can’t not see how the doctor use his scalpel to do something with my eyes. Even though the doctor tell me to see the lamp on the quite above part, I can still see everything,  so clearly.

The most painful part is… Mostly everything. Because this cataract operation is my second eye-operation, so I still have sewing scar inside my eyes.  Even tearing up that scar is hurting me like a lot. The one that I can’t bear is the moment they sucking up my lens with a tool. Daaamn, it is super irritating. The heart detector suddenly raises a high-tone voice. I felt super tensed. The nurses keep telling me to keep calm.

Wow how can she?  I’m the one lying on the table operation, not her. The only thing I can do is to remember to breath. So that’s everything I tell to my pity self. Breath.

“Breath. Wow, thank you, such a nice tips. Anyway, you told me that they suck your lens up? Is it even real? They changed it into other people’s lens or how?”

“Thank you for notifying that part. They changed it with a new product, a company produce this lens. So, right now in my eyes, I wear a brand,” told UL to me smiling.

“And one more thing about the lens. Do you want to know how does it feel to have no lens in your eyes?

Everything is red!  Red quite brown, color of blood. “

At that very moment, I got a goose bumps. I think UL is super strong and crazy as well. She even tell it by laughing now. Hahaha

“After then, the second scariest part coming. The moment when they put the lens to my eyes, the pain is something like the pain they suck my lens up.

And to be a sweet reminder, I can’t close my eyes. I can’t unseen everything. I have to see how the scalpel and all the doctoral machine which raises various voice dancing around my left eyes view, seeing how the doctor move his hand here and there, and I can’t cry. And I need to keep my tension stable so the heart detector isn’t producing any strange movements.

The operation only run for 20 minutes, and it is one of the longest unforgettable 20 minutes of mine.  It feels like forever!”

A Japanese-Hair Driver

Who doesn’t know online car? Grabbing an online car to bring us anywhere around the city has been a kind of culture. I ordered a green-brand online car that day, the destination is my lovely dormitory.

Once I open the car’s door, sit on the passenger car and see the driver’s hair from the back chair, I am amazed!

He has such a unique hair. I had never seen it before. To put it into your perspective,  it looks like sticking a black hair in the size of ping-pong ball to his head. Round and beautiful and cute. Yeah, at least cute enough for making me have big desire to touch it.

Automatically my mouth say, “Wow you had such a funny typical hair. Never seen this in real before. You just need to wear kimono or whatever Japanese cloth, having sword in your hand and bang! You are a Japanese, Sir.”

“Hahahaa…” we both laughed

“Thanks for your compliment,” said the driver. I can see his smile by glancing to the small mirror in the top middle part of the car.

“Yes your welcome, you truly deserve it! You have heard so many compliments of your hair, I guess. This is not your first right? “

“Hmm, unfortunately, this is my first. Thank you, nona.”

“My very pleasure, Sir! Anyway, being an online driver is your full-time or part-time job?”

“This is my full time.”

“Oh I see, you enjoy it right? “

“Sure. I got freedom, I can manage my own time, not bounded by company’s contract. Beinfg able to join any activities I wish to join. So happy for it.”

“Yes you are right!  I do agree. I remember a friend of mine, a driver too, but he is a personal driver of my CEO. He told me that he missed freedom. He needed more time with his family. Lucky you to be able to enjoy your driver life.”

“Yes, I’m so grateful of God’s gift to me. That’s why I hope I can let more people to enjoy happiness.”

We talked so conveniently that I didn’t realized I had arrived to the dormitory. It’s time to say goodbye. “Hello Mr. Japanese Driver, thanks for the nice ride and quality-conversation. I look forward to hear your inspiring story! Good luck for everything! Konichiwa! “

“Konichiwa!  Hahaha Always Success! ”

Working New-Mother

“How can I not falling in love with her? Having her in my womb for 9 months was a miracle, giving her a birth to this world is another breakthrough. And now having her cute smile every hour I open my eyes in the middle of night, morning, day, afternoon, night again… is something addictive. I fall in love to my little baby girl more and more.

lovely baby girl

Knowing that my maternity leave is about to end makes me feel a bit sad. How can 3 months be this fast?

I just see my little girl learn how to turn around. It’s on her second months. She even start talking to me! Enjoying her lovely view every time I breastfeeding her, her innocent face anytime she fall asleep, and a beautiful voice every time she laugh on anything. It was all make sense enough for a new-mother like me to think not to continue working anymore. I think these 3 months is enough. Enough for me to realize that I love my baby more than my Clients!

So I go back to office, teach my down liner, transfer all the needed knowledge, then send my resignation letter.

Now I have everyday to enjoy every single development of my little princess!”

Story of SL, a 31-year-old brand new mother.

A lecturer

“I’m the victim of university’s system. I used to teach Integrated Marketing Communication (IMC). The dean asked me to continue my master degree. So I did. By the end of my thesis submission, they told me no more left for IMC class because they had cut the class quota for new regulation adjustment. Only permanent lecturers are selected. I wasn’t. So I’m unemployed.”

“Oh really?  How can they discharge a great teacher like you,” I got a bit disappointed hearing this news.

My ex-lecturer looked up a bit,”Wohoo, thank you for being the first one to mention that. May I know why? I like to hear compliment.”

“Sure! Everyone loves to hear compliment.” I took not-a-deep-breath before continuing, ” You are the only conventional lecture in this modern world, teaching by speaking, don’t use Powerpoint because you want every student to listen and make their own summary based on their understanding while they’re focus on listening. Which is great. It helps me to practice on paying attention. These days when I’m working, I need to pay high attention to my Client. They will speak, sometimes very long and without pause, and being able to summarize their sentence is one of the skills I got from your class. “

My lecture smile widely.

“I haven’t finished yet. Do you remember the day when you asked me and all the students to do presentation and require us to wear blazer as well?  And every one in the classroom looks you with a hateful glance? Even some are cursing on your expensive requirement?  Including me?  Hahaha”

“Sure!  Hahaha Let me guess, you want to thank me?  You’re welcome. “

“Hahahha how can you know?”

“You are not the first student thanking me. I know a day like this will happen. I know someday all of you will thank me. So yeah, my most welcome.”

“Yes, thank you for it, Sir. I was forced to buy it and I need to wear it like almost everyday, while having interview, while meeting Clients, even when I’m having internal meeting. Thanks to you that I bought it years before.”

“Lucky you don’t buy that expensive blazer with your own money, but with your parents’ money ya. hahaha I have predicted it too.”

“Aha!  Hahahaha so that’s why back then you asked us to buy it ya. A very good yet precise decision. Many thanks, Mr. Lecturer.”

“Okay, now since you have known the benefit and thanking me, I think a thank-you isn’t complete yet without a cup of hot chocolate? I think blazer is much more expensive than a thank-you-hot-chocolate? hahaha”

Working Mother

“Sleep at 11 pm tonight and have to wake up 4 am in the morning. Happy, tired, and more than grateful!”

A story of MD, a 30 year old mother, having a lovely daughter, working as a Personal Assistant.

“I find it amazing if I look back at my previous days, how I wake up 4.30 am every morning, cooking breakfast and lunch for my family, bring my little daughter to school, then riding motorcycle to office, changing cloths, using heels, and put on my make up. Work until 7 pm.”

Then MD continued, “Sometimes in the middle of making report, I got a phone call from home. My daughter is crying, sometimes because she simply miss me, sometimes because she is sick, sometimes because any other reasons. Then I need to stop for a while and makes everything alright.

It has never been easy. Sometimes I need to choose between work and family. Of course family is forever number 1 in my heart. But, if there is no work, I got no money too for fulfilling her needs. So, time management is a must-have value in my life. I need to know my priority”

“What makes you able to do these things?” I’m questioning her.

“Hmm…” She stopped for a while, then answered, “I’m not sure too. I just keep it up hour by hour, day by day, keep doing it, no matter what happens. Maybe her happy face in my mind made me able to face this. It’s not that difficult after I did it several times. I got used to of it.”

MD also suggested me,”Hey you, young lady, enjoy your youth. You still have many more years to come! Don’t be afraid to be a mother, don’t also be afraid to be a working mother, it’s wonderful. You’ll love it.”

Insurance Agent

“As an insurance agent, if you are asked to choose between commission or Client’s need, which one will you choose?”

A basic yet daily challenging question an insurance agent have to face. The answer which they chose will really determine how they will run their business.

Some years ago, a woman called JS started her experience being a sales, when she was just 17-year-old. Having no many choices, she followed her mom’s step to be an insurance agent.

She was her mom down-liner. This is a very common strategy implemented by 2 people who know each other (commonly happen to family relationship), so they got the commission doubled. Both the down-liner and the up-liner will got the commission once the Client signed the insurance policy.

As JS is her mom’s down-liner, her mom being her team, her coach too. Her mom would teach her on how to do pitching, make illustration, negotiate and by the end of day, got the signing.

Everything went well at first, until JS found out that she and her mom got 2 significantly different concept in making the illustration.

They might be loving each other as mom and daughter, but they don’t work well as a team. JS’s mom is commission oriented, meanwhile on the contrary, JS is Client’s need-oriented.

One day, JS got a call from her friend. This potential Client was a 26-year-old-man, working as an employee, already got protections from some insurance companies. He is working inside building and have small possibility to be injured for an accident.

Looking at this rough background, his friend didn’t really need another insurance policy. He is just asking JS because he wanted to help JS got her first Client. So JS go to her mom, asking help to make the illustration.

JS set the monthly price not more than 1 million, just around IDR 500.000 – IDR 800.000. She went to her Mom and her Mom suggest her to made illustration with monthly price IDR 5.000.000.

JS found it really expensive, so she went back to discuss to her mom, “How could it be that high? He don’t really need these protections.”

“Yeah, but he is young and reach, he must have the money! Quote higher.”

Long story short, JS and her mom are agree on IDR 1.500.000, although JS still think it’s too expensive. So JS brought this illustration to her friend.

As predicted, her friend got surprised of the illustration. “More than 1 million? I thought it would be cheaper than this.”

JS try her best to explain, although she herself agree with her Client’s opinion. At the end, this potential Client don’t want to take the insurance policy.

JS regret and thought to herself, “She shouldn’t follow her mom’s direction at first.”

She has lost a Client, a friend as well.

By this experience, JS learnt that it’s better not to be in a top company as long as we are match with the leader, rather than being part of a top company but having so many incompatibilities with the leader.

Hope you got great leader!

There are some kinds of love in this world. And I hope you won’t experience this type.

I love to call this type of love as ‘Barbie type’.

Barbie doll

This is to the person whom you love, and that person loves you too, but in some points of life, you two just don’t destined one to another.

Maybe because he/she is having different ethnic from you, different religion from you, and unfortunately you live in a super exclusive family in which prohibiting love from different backgrounds.

Maybe because you have been someone else’s boyfriend/girlfriend/husband/wife, and you don’t wanna break your relationship with them. So you just keep it this way.

This ‘Barbie’ is just for you to love, for you to admire its beauty from afar, to keep it inside your cupboards, and then lock it. Just to be seen, not to be owned. Even if you own, you are not allowed to own it with all your hearts. Even if you own, nobody may know that this ‘Barbie’ is your special one.

You may not kiss or hug this ‘Barbie’, because if you do, it will be broken.

This is a super common story.

Is it hurt? Yes.
Deep? Depends.

It depends on how many quality time and memories you spend together. The more you spend, the deeper the feeling.

So, please be wise.

The only sailor I know living in this world is Popeye. No more than him. It becomes different after I met this guy.

One day I took a glass of tea with a stranger in a community’s meet up . And the story flowed.

“So what do you do?”, asked me.

“Driver. I’m a driver.”

“Is it Grab? Go-Jek? Uber?”, I mentioned some big names of start-up companies which provide online transportation booking currently happening in Indonesia.

He gave small smile, “Driver of a ship. I’m a sailor.”

sailor on a ship

“Aha!” I told myself, “It’s even real!”

“Okay, so how do you do?” I continued asking.

“Seeing sea everyday, day and night. No woman, no kids, either family. Only dozens of men sharing same woods, same roofs, same rooms, same food. Living for months above wide deep blue sea, under shining hot sun every morning and dark blue night every night. It’s cold, very cold. It’s hot, very hot.”

Then he took a deep breath and continued, “Sometimes after I get off from the ship, after months of carrying litters of fuel from Arab to China, I can feel my feet swaying. Although I have super sure I have stepped on the ground, I can still feel like I’m tossed around, shaking here and there. It’s kind of funny.”

One thing that is certain is, “Hugs and smiles from people whom I love, is the first thing I miss once I get to see trees and buildings! It’s been my everyday thoughts too, to keep me motivated, day and night.”
